Are Reptiles Good Pets for Beginners?

By Charlotte Wilson 2025-04-16 Choosing Pet
The word "novice" generally has two meanings:
The word "novice" generally has two meanings:
  1. For reptiles as pets, there is insufficient knowledge of their habits and information, and some easy-to-raise and hardy species need to be purchased
  2. Over-attention will be paid to reptiles, and there is a high probability that there will be too much intervention and repeated tossing, and hardy species also need to be purchased
  3. The requirements for reptiles remain in their own aesthetics, and usually tens of thousands of dollars will not be purchased. The budget needs to be slowly adapted to the stage of raising reptiles.
Reptiles suitable for beginners
  1. Fat-tailed geckos:

Recommended basic strains such as orange white, Ao Wu, Caramel Zulu, Milk Ao, and Milk Orange, with a budget of about 1,000. Cute appearance, low breeding space requirements, just ensure temperature and food.
  1. R genus geckos:

Recommended eyelashes, cape goya, etc. Among the eyelashes, lily white is basically popular, cute and soft, only needs to be fed with fruit puree to survive, and has a wide temperature adaptation range. As for Gaigoa, the price varies according to performance. Traditional straight lines and marbles can be bought for about 1,000 yuan. Gaigoa is especially recommended for beginners because they don't stick to glass very much, like to stay on climbing objects, and their poop is formed and they don't urinate randomly. It is worth mentioning that Gaigoa also looks very special, like the gargoyles in Western mythology, with bony horns on their heads, fat bellies and slender limbs, forming a different aesthetic.
  1. Blue-tongued skinks:

They are relatively large in size and are generally divided into two major camps, Australia and Indonesia. The blue-tongued skinks in northern Australia are recommended. They are docile in nature and raising them is a bit like raising puppies. They have a mixed diet and can be dealt with with dog food (the ordinary northern price is about 3,500-4,500 yuan). For Indonesian species, try to buy seedlings. Ilian is recommended, which has a more symmetrical body shape (the ordinary price is 2,500-3,000 yuan).
  1. Pine cone lizard:

A divine creature with a very docile personality and huge scales covering the whole body. The experience of raising it is currently the best I think. The price usually starts at 30,000 yuan.
  1. If you like snakes, you can also consider Black King and Hognose. Hognose has too many genes, so just choose the one you like. You need to feed it with suckling mice.
